The way a society teaches and nurtures its children reflects the very core of that culture’s values. The works in the series “Narrowed” comment on present day educational policies. These policies focus exclusively on basic language and math mechanics. These two areas of learning are certainly essential for every child. But so is the development of deep learning, creative thinking and individual interpretation of information. Our government’s current educational doctrine reduces language and math to mimetic routine and, by default, excludes the sciences, the arts, the humanities, and the physical and emotional development of children.

To test “knowledge”, children memorize absolute short answers to disconnected questions and recite back on limited-time tests. Is it any wonder our nation’s people, reared in this practice, are famous for responding best to short headlines and infamous for ignoring depth?

When learning is disconnected, scope of learning is eliminated and depth is ignored, we all grow narrow.
